A late 19th century Copeland porcelain Cockatoo, circa 1882, with coloured glass eyes and textured naturalistic coloured plumage, modelled standing upon a porcelain perch, the perch with incised stamp ‘Copeland’ beneath an indistinct mark, the whole set within a foliate-decorated gilt-metal hoop formed into a four-branch chandelier surmounted by a bat emblem; the cockatoo measures 51cm high, the diameter of the hoop is approximately 53cm, light fitting branches have been misshapen and one branch is separate but present.
Provenance: it has been in the vendor’s family since early 1900s. The Spode Museum Trust has made the following comments about this Copeland Cockatoo:
‘An entry in Copeland’s 1882 factory price list for statuary porcelain under the miscellaneous category states:
Cockatoo, fitted with Copper Suspender. China Coloured Naturally. £1. 5s. 0d.
Copeland’s catalogue photograph states that the bird measures 20 inches in height (51cm). The copper suspender measures 21½inches across (55cm).
Your example appears to have a replacement fitting (American?) converting it into some sort of light fitting.’
